September 2016 Motorcycle Ride

Monday, September 12 - Prineville to Arch Cape - 265 miles

Clear sky in Prineville and a bit of ice on the motorcycle. I knew the day would warm up but this first part of my ride would be chilly. I took Highway 126 to Sisters, 50 miles away. There I got fuel for the bike and a quick stop for coffee and a bite to eat. From sisters it would be Highway 20 then 22.

A stop at the Mount Washington viewpoint along Highway 20. More fire damaged land. After years of fire suppression a huge fire swept through this area killing many trees. This was from a pair of fires, the Bear Butte Fire and the Booth Fire, both caused by lightning and reported on the same day in 2003. They eventually merged to a single fire known as the B&B Complex Fires burning 90,769 acres. At the peak of firefighting there were over 2,300 personnel working on the fire and over $38 million spent battling the blaze.

After days of riding on open roads with no traffic I had to learn to share the rode with cars once again. Cars, trucks, campers...

Patches of lava are a reminder of what formed these mountains.

Detroit lake experiencing another year of drought. Not many years ago people would be boating over those stumps unaware of their presence.

I crossed Interstate 5 at Salem and continued on Highway 22 until I met Highway 101 at Hebo. Then it was north on 101 all the way to Arch Cape. Back in the dense green of the coast range.

The Tillamook Bay. The Pacific Ocean is just past the entrance to the bay seen in the distance.

One quick detour off Highway 101 for the 12 mile ride on Miami Foley Road with more views of the coastal mountains and I would soon be home.
